Not sure if internet rumor or fact, but I'd always heard both of their


names were marketing ploys. Iceland was given an unattractive name so the people who knew about it could keep tourists and settlers away, while Greenland was given an attractive name so people who probably actually wanted to go to Iceland would go there instead.
